Steeped in history, NUI Maynooth traces its roots to 1795 when St. Patrick's College was founded as a seminary in the town of Maynooth. In 1896, St. Patrick's College attained the status of a Pontifical University for its courses in Theology, Philosophy and Canon Law, and in 1966 opened its doors to lay students. The Universities Act 1997 /subsequently established NUI Maynooth as a standalone secular institution and a constituent university of the National University of Ireland.
