Welcome to the Civil & Public Service Temporary Assignment Scheme

Our primary focus in the civil and public service is to support the health and wellbeing of all our citizens. To achieve this, and to keep delivering essential services, especially for the most vulnerable and at-risk at this time, we need to come together and work as a unified public service.

To ensure this, a Temporary Assignment Scheme has been launched in partnership with DPER across a broad range of government and public sector bodies, and in consultation with key stakeholders.

The initial goals are to ensure:

• rapid movement of staff across the public service

• quick and easy access to experienced and skilled civil & public servants

The new Temporary Assignment Scheme is underpinned by a custom made database that allows the Public Appointments Service to match demand with the supply of talented, experienced and skilled civil and public servants.

The Temporary Assignment Scheme is a key resource to ensure essential services across the public sector continue to be delivered over the coming weeks and months. While the initial call is from the Health Service Executive, many other essential public services may require additional short term support.

This portal serves as an information hub primarily for those who have registered for the Temporary Assignment Scheme. This portal is underpinned by a custom made database that allows the Public Appointments Service to match demand with the supply of talented and skilled staff.

What is the Temporary Assignments Scheme

Already registered - What's Next?

We are delighted that you are part of this mportant Temporary Assignment Scheme.

By filling out your details on the questionnaire you received from your local HR, you have now been added to the Public Appointments Service database underpinning the Temporary Assignments Scheme.

By filling out your details on the questionnaire you received from your local HR, you have now been added to the Temporary Assignments Pool, which is essentially a database.

Those public service bodies who are requesting additional help are similarly providing us at Public Appointments Service with a list of their current skills gaps and roles that they need to cover.

An automated system then matches the skills, experience and location preference(s) of the civil and public servants with the roles and requirements identified by the public service bodies in need.

When a match is established, you will receive an email detailing the manager and organisation you are assigned to. The manager will then be in touch with you directly regarding the specifics of your assignment.

The assignment may be for an initial period of anything from several weeks to three months, with a possible extension where required.

As this is an evolving situation, demands may change in line with Covid-19 contingency measures. Local HR and employees will be kept informed of any developments via the contact details provided.

How do I register?

Local HR in each public sector organisation will identify roles and employees for release to the Temporary Assignments Scheme. All grades across the Public Service will be included in the scheme.

Employees who can register will then receive a notification from their Local HR including a link to an online Temporary Assignment Scheme Questionnaire. The questionnaire can be completed via mobile, tablet or phone for ease of use.

This information provided by the releasable employee is hosted on a central database within the Public Appointments Service. This helps to ensure the most appropriate skills and location match, where possible, as vacancies arise.

If you are unsure about your eligibility for release for Temporary Assignment, please contact your local HR department for confirmation.
