Meet Simon - Senior Crime Analyst with an Garda Síochána

Simon tells us about their role as a Senior Crime Analyst with an Garda Síochána and how the variety the job brings allowed them to excel.

Please tell us a little bit about your role.

My role is predominantly based assisting in investigations and operations relating to Economic Crime. However, there are frequent opportunities to assist in investigations and operations in other areas of the organisation, which helps build a vast skillset.

What were your reasons for applying for your role?

Having previously worked for An Garda Síochána, I knew I wanted to have a career within this organisation. When the opportunity to apply for this role arose, I was very excited as I knew it would mean being more involved in the frontline side of things, whether that be assisting in investigations/operations or providing up to date analysis on crime trends.

What do you value most about your job?

Knowing my work has made a difference and added value to investigations. Bringing a unique skillset to an investigation team and being actively involved gives me pride in my work which leads to greater job satisfaction.

What are some of the benefits and supports available to you?

An Garda Síochána Analysis Service (GSAS) is a great place to work for a number of reasons. One of them being that within this section, there are a number of different skillsets under the one roof. Meaning being able to constantly expand on your own skillset, while assisting others to expand in areas you may excel in.

What opportunities has this role provided for you?

This role has provided me with the opportunity to work outside of my comfort zone, therefore becoming more confident within my role.

What has surprised you since starting this role?

How important analysis is in all aspects of policing both internally and externally.

What aspect of the role do you particularly enjoy?

The variety of the job spec. Every investigation/operation has different requirements, even if only small differences, and therefore requires different knowledge in these areas.

Would you recommend a career in the public sector and why?

The public sector, in my experience has been great, as it provides ample opportunity for career progression, continuous professional development opportunities, flexible work/life balance and so much more. I always encourage friends and family to apply when the opportunity arises.
