Aisling tells us about her role as a Policy Analyst with the Policing Authority and how working in the Policing Authority has given her a unique perspective on how their efforts contribute to transparency, accountability and overall public trust in policing and community safety.
Please tell us a little bit about your role.
I am a Policy Analyst (Manager) whereby my role is mainly focused on contributing to the research function within the Policing Authority. This includes in-house research to support the work of the Executive, the Authority and its Committees in achieving the organisation’s statutory functions and corporate priorities, assisting with commissioning or research projects in respect of matters relating to policing services and building networks with others in the policing and oversight arenas, nationally and internationally, including oversight bodies, academic and research institutions, and other stakeholders. I also work with my colleagues on other oversight activities when needed.
What were your reasons for applying for your role?
After working for ten years in health and social care, both in the public sector and non-government organisations, I was eager to seek out a new challenge. On a personal level, I also wanted to feel stability in a role after years of studying. The multifaceted nature of policing appealed to me because I felt that my experience in research, health and social care would provide valuable insight and contribute meaningfully to the oversight process.
What do you value most about your job?
What I value most about the job is the opportunity for cross-organisational collaboration. I enjoy the matrix working environment, where I can interact with different colleagues and work across different topics. I really appreciate the feeling that opinions are listened to and valued, regardless of grade or positions. I also find great value in learning from my colleagues who bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to the table.
What are some of the benefits and supports available to you?
Within the wider civil service, I really benefit from the flexible working hours and remote working arrangements. These policies help my work-life balance and are very family friendly which as a mother to a young child, I really appreciate. Additionally, there are excellent training, and further education opportunities as well as CPD programs that I have been actively encouraged to engage in. From the perspective of the Policing Authority I enjoy participating in the social aspects of the role such as the reading club, staff engagement days and social outings. These activities foster a sense of community and camaraderie amongst colleagues which makes the work environment a lovely place to be in.
What opportunities has this role provided for you?
This role has provided me with a diverse range of opportunities. One significant opportunity has been my involvement in various work streams through matrix working, allowing me to collaborate across different departments and gain a broader perspective on our organisational goals. I’ve also had the chance to become involved in the tendering of a joint research scheme, which has given me experience in research grants from the other side of the table! Engaging with a variety of stakeholders, including community groups, NGOs, and Garda members of various ranks, has enriched my experience in building and maintaining professional relationships and has provided insights into different perspectives and community needs.
What has surprised you since starting this role?
Since starting this role, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how quickly I settled in and felt like part of the team, especially as I was returning from maternity leave. The supportive and welcoming environment made the transition seamless and helped me quickly regain my confidence. Another surprise was how quickly tasks were entrusted to me and the level of autonomy I was given to complete them. This trust from my colleagues and supervisors not only boosted my confidence but also allowed me to take ownership of my work and make meaningful contributions early on. Additionally, I was impressed by the comprehensive approach to oversight conducted by the authority. The thoroughness and diligence with which we monitor and evaluate our work ensure that we maintain high standards and deliver impactful results.
What aspect of the role do you particularly enjoy?
I thoroughly enjoy the dynamic nature of the work. Engaging in different work streams and participating in various initiatives and research projects keeps my role exciting and ensures that I am always challenged and growing.
Would you recommend a career in the public sector and why?
