Please tell us a little bit about your role.

The role of a Control Room Operative in An Garda Síochána is the first point of contact for people with an emergency. The best way to handle the job is to be calm, reassuring and pay close attention to detail. We create an incident report based on information provided by the caller and send this information to the dispatch unit who then direct Garda to the scene. The Control Room Operatives use an integrated system that allows the team and station to interact with each other, ensuring that incidents created, and information passed over the phone are not lost.

What were your reasons for applying for your role?

I applied for the role because my father is a military veteran in my country which inspired me to work in the police force. I always had an interest for all police, military and army roles. Working with An Garda Síochána gave me the opportunity to assist and help people in times of need which is fulfilling.

What do you value most about your job?

I am the first point of contact for people in need of assistance in times of emergency. I value their trust and confidence in me that I can help them in a time of distress.

What are some of the benefits and supports available to you?

• The Control Room Operative has psychological support if necessary. • Sergeants and Inspectors are always available for any queries or assistance. • We have a higher wage rate on Sundays and Bank Holidays. • The shift consists of 4 days on, 4 days off which allows plenty of time for rest and recreation.

What opportunities has this role provided for you?

There are courses available to all staff which furthers education within the role and creates opportunities to progress within An Garda Síochána.

What has surprised you since starting this role?

The variety of incidents requiring an emergency response.

What aspect of the role do you particularly enjoy?

Problem solving and assisting people in need.
