Consultants in this specialty provide medical and surgical care to women and have specialist expertise in pregnancy, childbirth, fertility, family planning and disorders of the female reproductive system. Obstetrics & gynaecology is a predominantly clinical specialty. A consultant will deal with normal and abnormal pregnancy and with disorders of the female reproductive organs. Besides the physiological and pathological processes involved, the psycho-social effects of reproductive events and of gynaecological disorders must be understood. The obstetrician-gynaecologist must demonstrate diagnostic and therapeutic skills and a particularly high competence in communication. The consultant will be competent in all obstetric procedures and in a number of core gynaecological procedures, and be able to assess patients’ problems, treat and investigate them appropriately, efficiently, and consistently over time. Working in women’s health is a stimulating and rewarding career.
