Tipperary University Hospital is a 272-bed hospital in Clonmel Co. Tipperary. It is an acute Model 3 hospital offering acute unscheduled and scheduled care across the broad range of specialties to the population of Tipperary and surrounding counties in its catchment area. The catchment population for the hospital is between 130,000 - 168,000 people depending on speciality required. The hospital is in the HSE Dublin and South East Health Region and is part of Integrated Health Area Carlow, Kilkenny and South Tipperary. The hospital has clearly established care pathways with University Hospital Waterford and Cork University Hospital. There are also links with specialist centres in Dublin such as Children Health Ireland and St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin.
The hospital provides Shared Care programmes for those attending Paediatric and Maternity Services outside the region. Mental Health Services are linked with St. Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny and University Hospital Limerick (Ennis, Co. Clare). About Clonmel and South Tipperary
The population of County Tipperary was 167,895 (2022 Census) of which 53,158 were under the age of 25 years, and 12,746 were over 75 years. The average age was 40.3 years. See Further information on the area.
With a population of almost 20,000, Clonmel is Tipperary’s largest town. A thriving industrial hub and home to several leading multinational pharmaceutical companies, it has plenty of shops, restaurants and lively pubs, and offers lots to do for those living locally. There is a selection of other small villages and towns near Clonmel, in which consultants may choose to live. There are a number of primary and secondary schools in the town and surrounding areas. Social and cultural activities available within the town centre include a county museum, arts centre, theatre, swimming pool, library, cinema and numerous sports clubs.
Clonmel is home to the TUS Regional Sports Hub. The multipurpose sports facility includes a World Athletics-approved 400 metres athletics track, which also has a water hurdle, long jump track, shot putt, discus and javelin stations. The local athletics club along with Clonmel Cycling Club and Clonmel Triathlon Club, make use of the hub, which each week attracts between 500 and 600 people to use its facilities. These also include a playground, skate park, a cycle (pump) track and a walking/running trail. Clonmel is also home to the Clonmel Canoe Club, and the Clonmel Outdoor Community Sports Hub - Slalom Course. The Slalom Course located at Suir Island in Clonmel is the longest purposed built slalom course in Ireland. It has hosted National Competitions and training camps for the Irish Slalom Team. Other sports catered for in Clonmel include soccer, rugby, gaelic football and hurling, swimming and many others. Clonmel is also home to The Suir Blueway, which runs for 53km in an east-west direction from Carrick-on-Suir to Cahir via Clonmel. The route is made up of a walking/ cycling trail for 21km running from Clonmel to Carrick-on-Suir and a further 32km of waterway along the River Suir, which can be canoed or kayaked. Clonmel is surrounded by hills and mountains with multiple trails and walks to suit all levels. It is the home of Peaks Mountaineering Club, which organises graded walks every Sunday.
Living in Tipperary
Moving to start a new consultant post is not a move for the doctor, but also for their family. Working in Tipperary University hospital allows the consultant and family to live either in Clonmel or in nearby towns and villages. Cahir is the home of Cahir castle, the best-preserved feudal castle in Ireland. Fethard has the most complete medieval town wall in Ireland; with over 90% of the original 1,125m stonewall surviving. Cashel is home to the famous Rock of Cashel, one of the most important early and medieval Christian sites in Ireland. All of these are within 30 minutes commuting time of the hospital.
