Eithne gives us insight into her career as a Senior Quantity Surveyor in the Planning and Building Unit of the Department of Education and Youth.

Please tell us a little bit about your role.

I am based in the Planning and Building Unit (PBU) in Tullamore as a Senior Quantity Surveyor. It is a very rewarding position as you are constantly thinking of the learning environment of the students and ensuring that they are in an environment that enhances their experience and achieving the best value in providing this.

What were your reasons for applying for the role of Senior Quantity Surveyor?

I wanted to bring my skills and experience to an area where I felt they could add value. A bonus has been that it has allowed me to establish a work life balance which entails knowing where I would be permanently and not continuously moving from project to project around the country.

What do you value most about your job?

The diverse nature of the work and being able to utilise all my skills and knowledge acquired to date while still adding to these on a daily basis.

What are some of the benefits and supports available to you?

The PBU is a multi-disciplinary unit with many teams and all of the individuals are extremely helpful and always willing to answer any queries. Managers engage actively with all levels and are extremely approachable.

What opportunities has this role provided for you?

The role provides training and CPD together with working collaboratively with other professionals.

What has surprised you since starting this role?

The dedication and commitment of everyone to provide a learning environment for all students to enhance their learning experience.

What aspect of the role do you particularly enjoy?

The diverse nature of projects and ensuring that guidelines are adhered to and value for money is achieved in the whole life cycle process. The opportunity in the future to gain experience across the numerous schemes which include large scale projects on green field sites.

Would you recommend a career in the public sector and why?

Absolutely, as it is very rewarding knowing that you are part of a team that is providing an essential service.

Anything else you would like to share

Working in the public sector and in the Department of Education allows a Q.S. to experience many facets of the profession and keep abreast of change, e.g. sustainability, circular economy and green procurement.
