Tony gives us insight into his career as a Senior Quantity Surveyor in the Planning and Building Unit of the Department of Education and Youth.

Please tell us a little bit about your role.

I’m based in the Planning and Building unit Profession and Technical Department in Tullamore in the Role of Senior Quantity Surveyor. My role at the moment involves working in the procurement area of the Department which involves a range of activities which assist in the procurement and appointment of Design Teams for the building of new School projects.

What were your reasons for applying for the role of Senior Quantity Surveyor?

Having worked in the Private sector for a number of years and on public projects I felt that the role in the Planning and Building Unit was something that would provide a new challenge and something I could bring my experience to assist in a positive way.

What do you value most about your job?

I value most the changing nature of my role. No day is exactly the same which makes the role interesting. It provides ongoing challenges but opportunities to gain vast experience and knowledge.

What are some of the benefits and supports available to you?

Throughout the Unit there are knowledgeable people who are always friendly, helpful and there and willing to answer questions should the need arise. You are continually encouraged in this regard.

What opportunities has this role provided for you?

The role has provided me with a huge insight and knowledge on the rules and procedures and application of the Capital Works Management Framework which is hugely beneficial experience.

What has surprised you since starting this role?

What surprised me the most is how different the role was to a normal Quantity Surveying role in a QS practice or a Contractor. The role provides significant opportunity to be involved and gain experience in varying work streams.

What aspect of the role do you particularly enjoy?

The part I most enjoy is every day is different with different challenges and opportunities to engage with a range of different people from all background and roles.

Would you recommend a career in the public sector and why?

Yes I would definitely. I have found the work environment to be extremely enjoyable with all the necessary supports being provided. Colleagues are always positive, friendly and helpful with a good culture and great team environment.
